What do you have to do?

Note: the information below has been left on this page so that you can see the structure of the 2008 National Reading Day activity. Although the day itself has now passed, you are still welcome to use the activities suggested here and on accompanying pages.

On National Reading Day simply present what your students are reading in your classroom to a wider audience. Showcase your students' engagement with reading to your school community, with parents, with other schools, with the world!

Teachers, students and parents are invited to share information about what they are reading with their schools and local communities on National Reading Day.

What are you reading today?

1. Choose an activity that suits your class.
Choose a springboard idea or a themed unit on this website, or design a unit of your own that will encourage your students to respond to the question – What are you reading today?

2. Select texts that will support the activity you have chosen.
There are many wonderful Australian and international children’s texts available (new and old) that deal with topics and themes relevant to children. If you are having trouble locating appropriate texts, why not talk to the children, to colleagues, the school or local librarian, refer to the Internet. If you still need help, contact us and we will support you in any way we can.

3. Identify suitable forums and audiences for the children’s responses

4. Work with your students as they respond to the texts
Things to think about:

  • Advertising your project to the target audience
  • Organisation required for National Reading Day
  • Sharing your stories with the other literacy lovers

A reminder: Please ensure you have obtained signed parental consent for your students’ work and photos to be posted on your school's Internet.
